Humanities@Home: In Search of King Pompey: Slavery & Freedom in Colonial New England

Come learn more about how an archaeologist and a historian joined forces to unearth the long-lost homestead of King Pompey, an enslaved man who won his freedom and became one of the first Black property owners in eighteenth century New England. 

Kabria Baumgartner is Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at Northeastern University. She is the author of prize-winning book, In Pursuit of Knowledge: Black Women and Educational Activism in Antebellum America. As a public historian, she has worked with numerous local historical organizations such as the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire and Marblehead Museum. In 2021, she co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative (NBHI), an organization that aims to highlight and incorporate Black history into the public landscape in Newburyport, MA. 

Meghan Howey is a Professor of Anthropology and in the Earth Systems Research Center and she is currently the Director of UNH's Center for the Humanities. She is the PI of the Great Bay Archaeological Survey (GBAS), a community-based and interdisciplinary archaeological research program focused on exploring early colonialism in the frontier space of the Great Bay Estuary/P8bagok. She has recently published a book written for a general audience to share some of the stories from GBAS's work: The Shock of Colonialism in New England: Fragments from a Frontier.
